LESSON

What are stereotypes and what are the effects of stereotypes?

Lesson Plan

Celina

Objectives:

Students will be able to understand the definition of stereotypes.

Students will be able to see the connection between hatred and the Asian stereotypes used on-screen and media industry.

Students will be able to understand the negative consequences and outcomes of the stereotypes.(A)What do you think of when you think about Asians? (Interactive Hook, around five minutes)

Create a questionnaire

There will be a worksheet or questions on screens about different questions about Asians both in real life and on-screen.

After everyone starts filling out the questionnaire, the class will get an in-class “share your answers and reason” debate time.

(B) Describe the definition of stereotype(Short introduction): Varies, 1-2min

Describe the definition of stereotype: “a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment” (Webster).

(Possible to replace or do both discussions and create a video of interviews from different peers and friends about what they think about Asians when they see on-screen/ remarkable Asian roles and whether they thought they were right or wrong.)

Describe the examples of stereotypes toward Asians.

“After a century of negative stereotypes as ‘unassimilable foreigners’ and ‘Yellow Peril,’ this group found themselves placed in an increasingly positive light by the mainstream media who depicted Asian Americans (AAs) as a model minority group that had triumphed over racial obstacles to reach economic, educational, and professional success - the quintessential American Dream” (Ho).

(Short in the middle discussion about how these stereotypes sound like)-(one to two minutes)

Based on the short discussion, move on to the lecture on how stereotypes affect hatred and negative feelings in real life.

C)The connection between hatred and stereotypes (Lecture)-Varies(3 to 4 minutes)

The study revealed how stereotypes had created misconceptions that people actually believe as truth.

Stereotypes had not only problems in spreading hatred but also in affecting Asians to feel shame in themselves and create hatred towards themselves.

Describe how different stereotypes had created various misconceptions by using quotations and resources. (Put recent “Asian Hate Crime” cases)

D)Why are these stereotypes and problems of misconceptions through media not focused?

Describe these shown stereotypes are rather considered as “model minority” than problematic stereotypes.

Describe the definition of “model minority”

After going over the definition of the model minority, discussion about why the problems of Asian stereotypes are not really focused on as a problem.

“Because of how Hollywood portrays Asians, people outside of the Asian community might more easily believe in these stereotypes since they are so prevalent; they become a source of information. The constant emphasis on the model minority stereotype through media simply causes non-Asians to view Asians in a certain way that is supposedly “positive” but also causes microaggressions (being unknowingly yet subtly racist)” (Le 2).

Close the lecture and class with an open discussion of how people think the media can improve or how they can improve these stereotypes.

Materials:

Question/survey paper

Different photos of stereotypical roles

(Possible: Video of the interview done by different friends and students)
